AI search is already changing how people find HVAC, plumbing and roofing help
Home services — HVAC, plumbing, roofing — run on urgent, local, high-intent searches. "AC not working," "roof leaking," "water heater burst." Historically those searches happened on Google. Increasingly, some of them happen inside an AI assistant instead, and that shift matters more for contractors than for most industries, because the job is worth a lot and the decision is often made fast.
Why home services is especially exposed
When someone asks an AI assistant "who should I call for emergency AC repair near me," the assistant often returns a short list — two or three names — not a scrollable page of ten. There's no page two. Either you're in that short list or you're not mentioned at all, and the customer moves on with the names they were given.
- 45% of consumers used AI to find a local business in the past year, up from 6% (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 52% used AI to find a local business in just the last 30 days (SOCi, 2026).
What tends to decide it for contractors
The businesses that keep showing up for trade queries usually have the basics locked down: an indexable site that states the trade and service area plainly, a Google Business Profile with consistent name/address/phone, real reviews, and increasingly, structured data that spells out their details and common questions. None of it is exotic — but for a contractor who's never had reason to touch their website's code, it's easy to have none of it.
The emergency-service angle
If you offer 24/7 or emergency service, that's a specific, high-value thing customers ask AI about directly ("emergency plumber near me open now"). Making that explicit — in your site copy and in FAQ structured data answering exactly those questions — is one of the more concrete ways a home-services business can line up with how these questions actually get asked.
Where to start
You don't need to guess whether this is affecting you. A scan shows whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name your business for the questions your customers ask in your area, who's named instead, and the specific gaps to close. It's free, and it's built for exactly these trades.
