AI visibility isn't a replacement for SEO — it's a layer on top of it
It's tempting to treat "getting recommended by ChatGPT" as a separate discipline from search engine optimization, with its own tricks and shortcuts. It mostly isn't. The tools answering "best HVAC company near me" today are reading largely the same public web that search engines have always crawled: your site, your directory listings, your reviews.
What SOCi found
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index asked ChatGPT for local business recommendations across more than 350,000 locations. About 1.2% — roughly 1 in 83 — were recommended. The rest weren't ranked lower. They simply never came up at all. That's a different failure mode than a low Google ranking: there's no page two to eventually reach.
Where the real gap is
The businesses that keep showing up tend to share a few traits: a reachable, indexable website; contact information that matches exactly across every place it appears; and, increasingly, structured data that states those facts in a format a tool can read without interpreting prose. None of that is exotic. Most of it is unglamorous hygiene that's easy to let slip, especially for a business that's never had reason to touch its own site's HTML.
What this product is, and isn't
This is a way to see whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity currently name your business when a customer asks, who gets named instead, and what specifically to fix — not a promise that fixing those things guarantees a result. AI answers vary from person to person and day to day, and nobody can guarantee what an AI tool says. What's checkable is whether the basics are in place, and a scan shows that directly instead of leaving it to guesswork.
