What LocalBusiness schema is, and why AI search tools care about it
"Schema markup" sounds like developer jargon, but the idea behind it is simple: it's a small, structured block of facts about your business, written in a format computers can parse exactly — not a paragraph they have to interpret.
The problem it solves
A human reading your homepage can figure out your phone number is a phone number even if it's buried in a sentence. Software has to guess. LocalBusiness schema (part of the schema.org vocabulary, written as JSON-LD) removes the guessing: it states your name, address, phone number and hours as labeled fields, in a script tag most visitors never see but crawlers and AI web-search tools can read directly.
Why it matters more now, not less
Search engines have used structured data for rich results (star ratings, business hours in search) for years. What's newer is AI assistants running web searches in real time to answer a question like "who does AC repair in my area" — and pulling from the same pool of crawled pages. A business whose contact details are stated unambiguously in structured data is easier for that process to describe correctly than one whose details only exist as prose scattered across a site.
A related piece: FAQPage schema
The same idea extends to FAQ content. If your homepage already answers real customer questions ("Do you offer emergency service?", "What areas do you cover?"), marking that up as FAQPage structured data puts your own answers, in your own words, directly in front of the same tools — rather than leaving them to infer an answer from somewhere else.
Checking your own site
Google's own documentation on LocalBusiness structured data is the primary reference we point to for this, and it's worth reading directly rather than taking a summary's word for it:

If you'd rather see exactly where your site stands, a free scan checks for this automatically and generates a ready-to-paste block matched to your business details if it's missing.
